Kundalini meditation is my favourite of all the active meditations I’ve tried. Developed by Indian mystic Osho who drew on a wealth of knowledge and discipline from many different sources – Zen, Buddhism, Sufism, etc, active mediations are great for us Westerners who have way too busy minds and little experience in sitting in quiet meditation. Active meditations help us quieten our chattering minds by movement, dance, deep breathing and bring us to a place of silence and “conventional meditation”.
Typically done in the early evening, Kundalini meditation lasts for one hour and begins with 15 minutes of shaking, followed by 15 mins of dancing with eyes closed, then 15 mins of stillness listening to music and ending with 15 mins lying quietly. Kundalini meditation is the sister meditation to “Dynamic” which is usually done early in the morning.
Sometimes it’s an effort to fight my way through the rush hour traffic to get there, but it’s always worth it. I feel more present, refreshed and calmer and rarely want to come back into the room when time’s up. It’s a great end to the working day and a great start to the week. Love this meditation!
