This morning I received an email from my acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist, Sandra Arbelaez. I thought you might like to read an update on the plans to regulate herbal medicine…
“last week we were surprised by the good news that the government intends to create a register of herbal medicine practitioners so that properly qualified practitioners will be able to carry on prescribing herbal remedies. This is due to be completed in April 2012.
In the mean time, the European directive on herbal remedies is coming into force this April and there will be some changes to herbal supplies.
Any herbal remedies that have been processed before hand such as pills, capsules, creams and tinctures are going to disappear and we will be able to access only powdered and raw herbs. There will be an amnesty period during which both herbalists and suppliers who still hold pills and capsules in stock will be able to carry on trading until this stock is finished. So thanks to all of you who helped save herbal medicine by writing to your MP’s and to the Minister of Health and for continuing to support Chinese herbal medicine”.
This is really great news as I use Chinese herbal preparations to help with side effects of the painkilling medication I’ve taken for years. I won’t be able to get them in the convenient pill format any longer but will try and stock pile as much as i can in the next few weeks.
